Sophie cunningham wnba retirement rumor

On 7 October 2026, Phoenix Mercury guard Sophie Cunningham addressed growing speculation regarding her potential retirement from the WNBA. Following the conclusion of the Mercury’s 2026 campaign, rumors circulated on social media suggesting that the veteran sharpshooter might be considering stepping away from professional basketball. Cunningham, who has become a cornerstone of the Phoenix franchise since being drafted in 2019, took to a post-game press conference to clarify her status. She explicitly denied that she has made any formal decision to retire, stating that she is currently focused on recovering from the physical toll of the season and spending time with her family. While she acknowledged that the league is evolving and that she is evaluating her long-term career goals, she emphasized that she remains under contract and is not ready to hang up her jersey just yet. Her comments have provided relief to the Phoenix fanbase, who have long valued her defensive intensity and perimeter shooting as vital components of the team's identity in the competitive Western Conference.
