Amber cox sophie cunningham free agency

On 15 September 2026, the Phoenix Mercury officially announced that veteran guard Sophie Cunningham has signed a multi-year contract extension, solidifying her role as a cornerstone of the franchise. This move marks one of the first major personnel decisions overseen by Amber Cox, who was appointed as the team’s new General Manager earlier this summer. Cox, known for her strategic approach to roster construction, emphasized that retaining Cunningham was a top priority to maintain team culture and perimeter stability during this transitional period. The agreement comes after a period of speculation regarding Cunningham’s unrestricted free agency status, with several teams reportedly interested in her services. By securing Cunningham, Cox has signaled a commitment to building a competitive core around established talent while navigating the complexities of the current salary cap environment. The organization expressed confidence that this signing provides the necessary continuity for the coaching staff to implement their new tactical vision for the upcoming 2027 season, marking a pivotal step in the team's ongoing rebuilding efforts under new leadership.
