How many ballon d'or does messi have

As of 5 November 2026, Lionel Messi remains the most decorated player in the history of the Ballon d'Or, holding a record total of eight trophies. The Argentine icon secured his most recent award in late 2023, following his pivotal role in leading Argentina to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. This historic eighth win further extended his lead over his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who has claimed the prestigious individual honor five times. Messi’s collection of Ballon d'Or trophies spans nearly two decades, with his first win occurring in 2009 during his tenure at FC Barcelona. Subsequent awards followed in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, and 2021. His dominance in the voting process throughout his career has solidified his status as one of the greatest footballers to ever play the game. While younger generations of talent continue to emerge and compete for the annual prize, Messi’s record of eight titles stands as a benchmark of excellence that remains unmatched in the sport as of November 2026.
