Is nlds best of 5 or 7

Published: 30 September 2026 As the 2026 Major League Baseball postseason commences, fans and analysts are reviewing the established playoff structure to ensure clarity regarding the series lengths. The National League Division Series (NLDS), which serves as the second round of the postseason following the Wild Card round, remains a best-of-five format. This structure requires a team to secure three victories to advance to the National League Championship Series (NLCS). Unlike the subsequent Championship Series and the World Series, which are played as best-of-seven contests, the NLDS is designed to be a shorter, high-intensity sprint. This format places significant pressure on starting rotations and bullpen management, as a single loss can drastically alter the trajectory of the series. With the 2026 playoffs officially underway, teams are operating under the standard 2-2-1 home-field advantage format, where the higher-seeded team hosts the first two games, the lower seed hosts the next two, and a decisive fifth game returns to the higher seed's home stadium if necessary. This format has been a staple of the divisional round since its inception.
