Why is gardner minshew playing today

On 31 October 2026, the Las Vegas Raiders officially confirmed that Gardner Minshew will start at quarterback for the team's game against the Cincinnati Bengals on 1 November 2026. This decision follows a period of significant instability in the Raiders' quarterback room throughout the 2026 season. Head coach Antonio Pierce opted to return to Minshew after the team struggled to find offensive consistency under backup options and following a series of disappointing performances that necessitated a change in leadership on the field. The coaching staff emphasized the need for Minshew’s veteran experience and his ability to manage the game effectively against a formidable Bengals defense. While the team has faced mounting pressure to evaluate younger talent, the immediate priority for this Sunday matchup is securing a victory to stabilize their standing in the AFC. Minshew has spent the week preparing with the first-team offense, focusing on reducing turnovers and improving red-zone efficiency, which have been identified as the primary areas of concern for the Raiders' struggling offense this year.
